ENF — China's Highest Standard

No-added-formaldehyde grade under GB/T 39600-2021. Emission ≤ 0.025 mg/m³ (1 m³ climate chamber method). The world's most stringent formaldehyde standard — stricter than both E0 and F☆☆☆☆. Required for premium, health-conscious markets.

F☆☆☆☆ — Japan JIS Standard

Japan's highest formaldehyde emission grade under JIS A 1460. Emission ≤ 0.3 mg/L (desiccator) or ≤ 0.005 mg/m³ (chamber). Mandatory for panels sold in Japan. Widely recognized as the benchmark for ultra-low emission in Asian markets.

E0 Formaldehyde Emission

Ultra-low emission ≤ 0.5 mg/L (desiccator method). Compliant with GB/T 11718-2009. Accepted in Australia, EU, and many Middle East markets. The practical sweet spot for most export-grade furniture panels.

E1 Formaldehyde Emission

Low emission ≤ 1.5 mg/L (desiccator method). Compliant with EN 622-5 and GB/T 11718. Suitable for general furniture manufacturing. The most cost-effective grade for markets without strict E0 requirements.

AS/NZS 1859.3

Australian/New Zealand standard for formaldehyde emission from reconstituted wood-based panels. For Australian orders, relevant testing and documents should be checked against the selected product, factory route and buyer requirement.

CARB Phase 2 (California)

California Air Resources Board Phase 2 — the strictest formaldehyde regulation in the United States. MDF limit: 0.11 ppm (ASTM E1333 chamber method). De facto national standard; also strongly preferred by Middle East buyers.

ISO 9001:2015

Quality management system certification. Covers raw material sourcing, production process control, finished product testing, and continuous improvement — verified by SGS or equivalent accredited body.

FSC Chain of Custody

Forest Stewardship Council chain-of-custody documentation can be checked for buyers requiring FSC-certified panels, depending on the selected product and factory route.

EN 13501-1 Fire Classification

European fire reaction classification for construction products. Fire-retardant MDF or compact HPL capability must be checked against the selected factory route and project requirement.

EN 622-5 (MDF Standard)

European standard for MDF boards — dry conditions (MDF) and humid conditions (MDF.H). Covers mechanical properties, thickness swelling, and formaldehyde class requirements.

ENF — The World's Strictest Formaldehyde Standard

ENF (No Added Formaldehyde, 无醛级) is China's highest formaldehyde emission grade, defined by GB/T 39600-2021. The limit is ≤ 0.025 mg/m³ using the 1 m³ climate chamber method — making it the most stringent formaldehyde standard in the world, surpassing both E0 (≤ 0.5 mg/L desiccator) and Japan's F☆☆☆☆ (≤ 0.005 mg/m³ chamber equivalent).

ENF-grade panels use MDI (isocyanate) or other no-added-formaldehyde resins instead of traditional UF (urea-formaldehyde). This makes them the ideal choice for children's furniture, healthcare environments, and premium residential projects where indoor air quality is critical.

Recommendation: If your market has strict VOC regulations or your brand positions on health and safety, ENF may be relevant for strict VOC requirements, but availability, price difference and documents must be checked against the selected factory route.

F☆☆☆☆ — Japan's Gold Standard

F☆☆☆☆ (F-four-star) is the highest grade in Japan's formaldehyde emission classification system under JIS A 1460. The emission limit is ≤ 0.3 mg/L by the desiccator method, or equivalently ≤ 0.005 mg/m³ by chamber test. It is mandatory for all wood-based panels used in Japanese residential construction and furniture.

F☆☆☆☆ certification requires not just passing a lab test — the entire production line must be registered and audited by a JIS-accredited certification body (such as JAS or JIS). This makes it one of the most rigorous certification processes in the global panel industry.

Note: While primarily required for Japan, F☆☆☆☆ certification carries significant weight in other Asian markets (Korea, Southeast Asia) and among international buyers who recognize Japanese quality standards as a benchmark. If you're not selling to Japan, ENF or E0 is usually more cost-effective while achieving comparable emission performance.

AS/NZS 1859.3 — Australian Market Requirements

AS/NZS 1859.3 is the Australia/New Zealand product specification for decorative overlaid wood-based panels (melamine, PVC, veneer). Supply is aligned to it, with E0/E1/ENF emission grades available for MDF, particleboard and plywood.

Australian importers must ensure products comply. Non-compliant shipments can be rejected at the border. Pre-shipment testing using the specified 1 m³ chamber method can be arranged for Australian orders to support compliance documentation before loading.

Key point: Decorative overlaid panels supplied to AS/NZS 1859.3 are typically specified at E1/E0/ENF emission grades (≤ 1.5 mg/L desiccator for E1), though the chamber test method differs. Relevant test reports can be discussed for Australian buyers according to the selected product, factory route and order requirement.

CARB Phase 2 — US Market Compliance

CARB Phase 2 (California Air Resources Board) is the strictest formaldehyde emission regulation in the United States. It applies to hardwood plywood, particleboard, and MDF. CARB P2 limits for MDF are 0.11 ppm (ASTM E1333 chamber test), roughly equivalent to E0 levels.

Note: CARB P2 may be requested by some buyers outside the US. Availability and supporting documents should be confirmed before order commitment.

Third-party batch testing through SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas can be arranged based on order requirements and buyer request — formaldehyde, MOR/MOE, IB, thickness swell. Test reports provided upon completion.

Pre-Shipment Inspection

SGS, Bureau Veritas, or a buyer-nominated inspector can be arranged to verify quantity, packaging, labeling and loading when required by the order.
